ESR10 - Tobias Metzlaff

In the last weeks of 2020, my colleagues Viktor Levandovskyy and Karim Abou Zeid from RWTH Aachen and me finished the extended paper of the ISSAC 2020 article and submitted it to the Journal of Symbolic Computation. We are looking forward to receive feedback. The year 2021 continued with our work together with Cordian Riener and Philippe Moustrou, on which a report will appear in the POEMA Newsletter soon. A nice event, that takes place currently, is the meeting Mørketidens Mattemøte organized by UiT for the community of Norwegian mathematicians. Hans Z. Munthe-Kaas will give a talk tomorrow morning on affine Weyl groups and multivariate interpolation, which is of great interest to me.

 This month, I began my secondment in Tromsø at the UiT Norges arktiske universitet together with Cordian Riener . After a ten-days quarantine, I am now able to work from an office in the department of mathematics, where I also met my fellow ESR Sebastian Debus and more people from the algebra research group. Last week we all participated in the POEMA workshop and the following ESR-day. It was a good occasion to see, how far we all got with our research after roughly one year and to find out what the plans for the future are.

This week, we have a visitor in the team: Edgar Fuentes from Artelys, Paris. He is a fellow ESR in the POEMA network and I am sure, that we will have some fruitful discussions. Also, the secondment at UiT Tromsø will start in a few weeks. I hope that the travel situation will remain as it is right now, so I will be able to travel to Norway.

After the summer break, we have some events to prepare for in the coming weeks. The ESRs of POEMA will have a possibility to finally meet again in October at CWI. It has been a long time since we saw each other in person and we will be able to discuss and exchange about our current research. In November the second POEMA workshop will take place in Amsterdam with all members of the project. Finally, after our successful article about Non-commutative Gröbner bases over rings at ISSAC 2020 , my co-authors, Viktor Levandovskyy and Karim Abou Zeid, and I are working on an extended paper that will be published at the beginning of December.

The time has come for two great conferences: ICMS and ISSAC. In order to record presentations, I recently spend a few days in Aachen together with my coauthors Viktor Levandovskyy and Karim Abou Zeid from the RWTH. Today was the last day of ICMS 2020 . It is a biannual conference about mathematical software. We contributed a talk about the implementation with Letterplace, a subsystem of Singular. The sessions offered  a large variety of topics and, although it was not possible to participate in every talk, I was able to learn about new computational methods. Luckily all slides are recorded and online. Our presentation was related to the article " Computation of free non-commutative Groebner bases over Z with Singular:Letterplace ", which we will present at ISSAC 2020 next week. We are ready to face the questions of the audience and look forward to hopefully see you there.

The last months were a time of home office and lock down. A lot of progress was made, but now I am looking forward to work in my office again. Luckily, Inria is relaxing its policies in regards of the Covid19 epidemic. In the next weeks, the researchers will return to the institute.

Since one month, INRIA is closed and we work from home. The current situation is difficult due to the lack of personal contact to my supervisor and fellow researchers, but also due to some technical problems, which were fixed luckily. We stay in touch via video conferencing systems and make the best out of the situation. I intend to participate in two conferences in the upcoming months: ISSAC  in Greece and ICMS  in Germany. The subject of both conferences is related to applications of computer algebra and the talks will be given online. I am looking forward to these events.
